California’s Sway Motorsports introduces an electric three-wheel scooter prototype that took a few years to develop and is now almost production-ready.
Apparently, the project was carried out ‘in his spare time’ by one Mr.
Joe Wilcox, a toy-designer and Rhode Island School of Design graduate who also worked in the past for NASA’s Johnson Space Center and MIT.
The pictured prototype weighs in at 104 kg and uses a 60V/20Ah lithium-iron phosphate battery pack that gives it a range of about 10 miles (16 km).
One of the most distinctive features of its design is the place where the components of the battery have been positioned: right underneath the platform that includes its large footpegs.
This solution allows for a lower center of gravity and more stability, while the battery package is also kept away from the tilting structure of the vehicle.
However, Sway points out that the definitive version of the product (which should be ready at some point in 2013) will come with a 60Ah battery pack that will provide this little trike with a range of about 50 km (30 miles).
This battery feeds a 3500W hub motor placed in the single rear wheel that allows this prototype to reach a top speed of about 65 km/h (40 mph).
The model measures 1.
32 meters in length, 0.
89 m in width and 1.
02 m in height, has three 10″ wheels and uses LED technology only for all front- and rear-lights and indicators.
No word on both pricing and the possible final name of the product.
