The World Superbike round at the end of August at Nurburgring may be the last for the financially troubled German circuit.
According to Speedweek.
de, Dorna is going to start talks with both the Lausitzring and Sachsenring owners, in order to change venues for the 2014 WSBK championship, as the contract with Nurburgring expires at the end of the this year.
Lausitzring was previously a World Superbike venue until 2008, when it was replaced by Nurburgring, and the highly popular Sachsenring currently hosts MotoGP.
According to Dorna’s World Superbike boss Javier Alonso, they want to keep a round in Germany, because it is very ‘important market’, but they are not willing to lose money to hold an event as the “economic situation in the championship is not good.
” Unfortunately due to economic crisis, the dwindling number of spectators (Lausitzring calculates just 20,000 people for the three day event) and the fact that local governments are lowering their contributions, Dorna’s sanctioning fees (apparently 500,000 euros) would be unprofitable for track owners, at least for Lausitzring.
Sachsenring would be a more obvious choice because of its popularity and while it may not draw the numbers of a MotoGP event, it could according to Speedweek, have a healthy crowd because of Max Neukirchner.
