In yesterday’s qualifying debrief with motomatters.
com Jorge Lorenzo said “it will be difficult for them to catch me,” and it was exactly that way in the MotoGP race at Silverstone.
The Fiat Yamaha rider not only dominated, but rode away with the race leaving the rest of the field to fight over the other two podium places.
The Spaniard got the holeshot and by the third lap picked up a gap over 3 seconds over the rest of the field and by the ninth lap was ahead by 7.
2s and from there coasted for the rest of the race.
A perfect race weekend for Lorenzo, pole position, fastest lap and the victory playing tribute to the Beatles.
Andrea Dovizioso took second place, but just didn’t have Lorenzo’s race pace and could never contend with him, but he rode a excellent race taking an important second spot podium, that puts him second in the standings and 37 points from the Spaniard.
The battle for third was the best part for the viewing audiences with Ben ‘Elbowz’ Spies taking third and his first podium of the season after battling first with the middle of the field to become an all American battle with Nicky Hayden who kept all his lines closed but Spies risked it and made his last attempt pass stick and leaving an upset Hayden his fourth finish in four races.
Casey Stoner took fifth after a horrible start that left him in 12th.
The Ducati rider had to make his way up the field and took several laps to pass a suffering Dani Pedrosa, who after two crashes in two days simply couldn’t get his Honda to perform.
Stoner also set his fastest lap in the final of the race but it was simply too late, while he tailed Spies and Hayden waiting for them to make a mistake, but it didn’t happen.
Randy de Puniet who seemed destined for a podium today held second place for several laps until a faster Dovizioso overtook him and the French rider started to fade with grip problems and finished in sixth.
Seventh went to Marco Simoncelli, while his team mate Marco Melandri crashed out in the first lap.
Suffering Dani Pedrosa took and eighth spot, while Colin Edwards was ninth and more than 20 seconds from his Texas Tech3 team mate.
Aleix Espargaro closed out the top ten.
Loris Capirossi dropped his Suzuki into the gravel after messing up a pass on Hector Barbera.
Hiroshi Aoyama after hurting his back in this morning’s warm-up pratice didn’t race.
Leaving only 13 riders to pass under the chequered flag and next Saturday’s race at Assen will probably be the same.
