After slimming down its efforts at the end of 2012 season, but still supporting Feel Racing – that currently runs under the GoldBet Italia banner, BMW Motorrad has decided terminate its factory involvement in the FIM Superbike World Championship at the end of 2013 season.
The official reasons for the pullout is ’strategic realignment’ and “focus on the further expansion” and “the development of market potential in emerging countries.
”BMW Motorrad officially debuted in the World Superbike championship in 2009, along with Aprilia.
While Aprilia has already taken home two world titles with Max Biaggi and two manufacturer titles, the German marque had to wait until 2012 to see Marco Melandri give them their first ever victory at Donington Park.
So far Melandri and Chaz Davies have given the BMW Goldbet squad 11 race wins and 33 podium finishes, including last Sunday’s victory by Melandri and the second place podium for Davies at Moscow Raceway.
“The team is a very professional and motivated group of people and I am sure they will continue to do everything to end the season on a high note”, said Andrea Buzzoni, General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK.
“Twenty thirteen is a good year, the atmosphere within the team is great and also our riders, Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies, are doing an excellent job.
We are satisfied with the current results and, of course, we will keep working hard.
Therefore I am convinced we can celebrate more successes with Marco and Chaz as the season goes on.
I am sorry about the decision, but I understand the strategic decision making of the company.
I want to thank all the people who are involved in this project.
”Melandri was already in talks with Kawasaki and Aprilia before the official announcement, while this was the first year that Davies was racing for BMW.
