Ben Spies return to action at Indianapolis was very shortlived.
The Pramac rider highsided during the third free praction caught out by the traction control on his Desmosedici, that doesn’t engage in first gear.
The crash left the American with a dislocated left shoulder and a wrist injury and he assessed on Tuesday by his doctors in Dallas.

Spies tweeted yesterday evening, “Saw the doc today.
not great.
Off to surgery tomorrow,” without specifying what type of surgery he’ll have to undergo.

Following his crash, Spies said, I’ll try to come back as soon as possible, but I also want to come back at 100%.
There’s no reason for me to rush back just to fill the grid, but definitely this injury is nothing like the right shoulder; the pain is very bad right now, but the healing process won’t be anything near the other one—I know that for sure.
We just need to do the right things, follow the doctors’ orders again, and rehab.

This injury won’t even affect me in a few months, but I need to do the right things the right way.

Spies will be once again be replaced by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro (who already has six races to his name and is 12th in the standings) at Brno and Silverstone.
Update:Spies underwent surgery on both shoulders after it was diagnosed that his left shoulder was worse than originally diagnosed.
Initially he was diagnosed with a third degree separation – instead it was a more severe grade-five separation and he also went sugery on his right shoulder to remove scar tissue from his previous operation.
His recovery time is still unknown.
