Building connections: The rise of social groups for young women
In recent years, the importance of community and social connections has become increasingly evident, especially among young women navigating the complexities of adulthood. Caitlin Lendrum, a 26-year-old from Ellon, has taken a significant step in addressing this need by founding The Girls Chat, a social group designed to foster friendships and support among women in the north-east of Scotland.

Launched just three months ago, the group has already attracted nearly 100 members, highlighting a growing demand for such communities.

The need for connection

Caitlin’s journey began with her own experiences of loneliness and the struggle to form meaningful connections. “I never really had a big friend group growing up, and as I got older, I struggled to connect with people,” she shared. Recognizing that many young women face similar challenges, Caitlin decided to leverage social media to create a space where they could come together.

Her initiative resonated with others, leading to the formation of a vibrant community that now boasts a following of over 750 on Instagram.

Creating a welcoming environment

The Girls Chat is more than just an online group; it serves as a safe haven for women aged 18 and over from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Caitlin has organized various social events, including weekly walks and themed meet-ups, to encourage in-person interactions. The first gathering took place at The Bee Crafty Studio, followed by enjoyable activities like a boozy brunch and an alpaca experience. These events have proven beneficial, with many participants expressing newfound confidence in attending alone.

Fostering mental health and confidence

As the group continues to grow, Caitlin remains committed to ensuring that it caters to the diverse needs of its members. She actively seeks suggestions for future events, aiming to create inclusive activities that everyone can enjoy, including those that do not revolve around alcohol. Upcoming plans include a quiz night, a make-up masterclass, and an afternoon tea, which promises to be the largest event yet.

The positive impact of The Girls Chat extends beyond socializing; it has significantly contributed to Caitlin’s own mental health and confidence. “It can be lonely in your 20s if you don’t have friends to do anything with,” she reflected. The group has not only helped her forge close friendships but has also provided a platform for others to connect and share their experiences. As Caitlin noted, the group has been a source of empowerment, allowing women to break free from the isolation that often accompanies adulthood.

A growing movement

The success of The Girls Chat underscores a broader trend of young women seeking community and support in an increasingly disconnected world. As social media continues to play a pivotal role in shaping relationships, initiatives like Caitlin’s are essential in fostering genuine connections. The Girls Chat exemplifies how a simple idea can evolve into a powerful movement, transforming lives and promoting mental well-being among young women.
