A heartfelt charity show brings the community together to honor a beloved local theatre icon.

In a touching display of community spirit, the Phoenix Theatre in Aberdeen is set to host a charity show titled Louder Than Words, honoring the late Liz Milne, co-founder of the theatre and a beloved figure in the local arts scene.

This event, running from November 20 to 23, aims to raise funds for Friends of Anchor, a charity that provided invaluable support to Liz during her battle with cancer.

A legacy of love and support

Liz Milne, who passed away at the age of 73, was not only a dedicated mother and teacher but also a vibrant member of the theatre community.

Her son, Jonnie Milne, expressed the profound impact her loss has had on the family and the theatre group. “The last few months have been tough, but we’re doing exactly what my mum would have wanted,” he shared. The show is a testament to Liz’s enduring spirit, with Jonnie noting, “This is as much Liz’s show as it is anyone else in the company.”

Bringing the community together

The production, which features a mix of songs from popular musicals, is not just a performance but a celebration of Liz’s life and her contributions to the community. The choice of the title Louder Than Words reflects the sentiment that actions speak louder than words, especially in the context of raising funds for a cause that Liz was passionate about. Jonnie recalled how Liz had a hand in selecting the show’s title, emphasizing her belief in the power of community action.

Making a difference through performance

With the aim of raising significant funds for Friends of Anchor, the Phoenix Theatre is also organizing a raffle during the show, featuring various prizes. Volunteers from the charity will be present each night, further emphasizing the collaborative effort between the theatre and the charity. Erica Banks, head of communications at Friends of Anchor, expressed gratitude for the Milne family’s support, stating, “Every penny raised will make a direct, positive impact for cancer and haematology care here in our region.”

A tribute filled with emotion

As the cast prepares for the performances, they are reminded of Liz’s legacy and the joy she brought to those around her. Jonnie noted that while there may be tears during the final night, the focus remains on delivering a spectacular show that uplifts the audience. “We’re hoping to put on a spectacular week of performances to banish the winter blues,” he said, highlighting the importance of joy and community in the face of loss.

Join the celebration

The Louder Than Words charity show promises to be a memorable event, filled with music, dance, and heartfelt tributes. For those who wish to support a worthy cause while enjoying a night of entertainment, this show at the Aberdeen Arts Centre is not to be missed. Tickets are available now, and every contribution will help make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
