The transformative power of pets: A story of recovery and companionship
In a world where mental health challenges are increasingly recognized, the role of pets in healing and recovery is gaining attention. Hannah Souter, a 35-year-old peer support worker from Banff, shares her inspiring journey with her beloved dog, Thor, who has been a beacon of hope and support in her life.

A serendipitous beginning

Hannah’s relationship with Thor began nearly a decade ago when she fortuitously attended the birth of a litter of puppies.

At just six weeks old, Thor was born into Hannah’s hands, and from that moment, a bond was formed. Hannah recalls, “When he opened his eyes and crawled up to me, I knew he was the one for me.” This connection would prove to be life-changing.

From addiction to recovery

At the time of Thor’s arrival, Hannah was grappling with heroin addiction and severe mental health issues that had plagued her since her teenage years.

She describes how Thor became her motivation to seek help and turn her life around. “If I came home on drugs, Thor would sense something was wrong. His concern made me feel guilty and pushed me to get clean,” she explains. The unconditional love and companionship of her dog provided the final nudge she needed to embark on a path to recovery.

Support through adversity

Hannah’s journey has not been without its challenges. After losing her mother to suicide three years ago, Thor was there to help her navigate the grief. “He encouraged me to get out of the house and not give up,” she shares. Additionally, when Hannah was diagnosed with epilepsy, Thor displayed an uncanny ability to sense her seizures before they occurred, providing comfort and assistance during her episodes. His loyalty and instinctive care have been invaluable to her recovery.

The joy of companionship

Beyond the challenges, Hannah and Thor share countless joyful moments. From long walks on the beach to playful snow days, their adventures are filled with love and laughter. Hannah describes Thor as a big softie who brings joy to everyone he meets, especially those who seem lonely. His playful nature and love for life remind Hannah of the importance of companionship and the healing power of animals.

A message of hope

Hannah’s story is a testament to the profound impact pets can have on mental health and recovery. She encourages others who may be struggling to hold on to hope: “Animals love you unconditionally, no matter what you’ve done in your past. Don’t give up. There’s always a reason to keep trying, even if you feel like you’ve failed many times.” With Thor by her side, Hannah continues to inspire others to seek help and embrace the love that pets can offer.
