Winter weather forecast: Snow and ice warnings across northern regions
As winter approaches, forecasts indicate a significant drop in temperatures across northern Scotland, with snow and ice expected to blanket the region in the coming days. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, particularly affecting the northern Highlands and the coastal areas of Moray and Aberdeenshire.
Regions such as Inverness, Elgin, Fraserburgh, Thurso, Wick, Ullapool, Stornoway, Orkney, and Shetland are all under alert as temperatures are forecasted to plummet.
The warning is set to take effect from 4 PM on Sunday and will remain in place until 11 AM on Monday, marking the first significant sign of winter’s arrival.
Weather experts predict that the cold snap will persist into Monday night and Tuesday, with several locations likely to experience temperatures dipping below freezing. Braemar and other inland areas are expected to record the coldest temperatures of the season, potentially falling to as low as -7°C.
Although these temperatures are forecasted, the wind chill factor, combined with icy rain and minimal cloud cover, may make it feel even colder.
Higher elevations are anticipated to receive the most significant snowfall, with forecasts suggesting up to 15 cm of snow in areas above 1000 feet, particularly in the Cairngorms. This influx of snow is likely to be welcomed by the ski resorts in the Highlands, which are eagerly awaiting the start of the ski season. Forecasters indicate that the next few days will bring the coldest weather of the winter thus far, with additional wintry conditions expected to follow.
For those looking to stay updated on the weather in their area, visiting the Met Office website will provide the latest forecasts and warnings. As winter settles in, residents and visitors alike should prepare for the challenges and beauty that the season brings.
