In a remarkable achievement for the hospitality sector in Aberdeen, two local pubs have been honored with the coveted Loo of the Year Awards 2024. The Archibald Simpson at Castle Street and The Justice Mill on Union Street have both received a platinum plus grading from inspectors, showcasing their commitment to maintaining high standards in toilet facilities.

Recognizing excellence in public restrooms

The Loo of the Year Awards aim to elevate the standards of toilet provision across the UK, particularly in public spaces. This initiative is crucial as it emphasizes the importance of cleanliness and accessibility in facilities that cater to the public.

Inspectors conducted unannounced visits to thousands of toilets nationwide, including those at the two Aberdeen Wetherspoons, to assess their quality.

Grading criteria for the awards

Toilets are graded on a scale that includes bronze, silver, gold, platinum, platinum plus, and diamond, with facilities that do not meet acceptable standards receiving no grade at all. The evaluation process considers various factors such as décor, maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, and the availability of hand washing and drying equipment. Overall management of the facilities is also taken into account, ensuring that they meet the expectations of the public.

Local pride and recognition

Andrew Wallace, the manager of The Justice Mill, expressed his delight at the recognition, stating, “We are delighted with the grading. Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in excellent condition at all times, and it is great that this has been recognized by the inspectors.” This sentiment is echoed by Becky Wall, managing director of the Loo of the Year Awards 2024, who praised the high standards of design and maintenance at both pubs. She noted, “The toilets at the two pubs have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained. The pubs deserve their platinum plus awards.”

This recognition not only highlights the efforts of the staff at these establishments but also sets a benchmark for other pubs and restaurants in the region. As the hospitality industry continues to recover and evolve, maintaining high standards in all aspects, including restroom facilities, will be essential for attracting and retaining customers.
