The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has left countless families grappling with unimaginable challenges. Among them is Antonina Telytsia, who faced the harrowing reality of caring for her sick child amid the siege of Mariupol. Her story is a poignant reminder of the resilience displayed by many in the face of adversity.
The impact of war on daily life
Before the full-scale invasion by Russian forces, life in Mariupol was relatively peaceful. Antonina, a teacher, enjoyed a comfortable life with her husband and two daughters. However, everything changed in February 2022 when the city was besieged.
The initial days were marked by a sense of normalcy, but as missiles began to strike the city, fear quickly took hold. Essential services like electricity, water, and gas were lost, forcing families to adapt to a new, harsh reality.
As the situation deteriorated, Antonina and her family faced the grim task of cooking on open fires in the freezing cold. The scarcity of food and the constant threat of shelling created an atmosphere of desperation. Antonina’s youngest daughter, Varvara, who suffered from a congenital heart condition, became increasingly vulnerable to illness. The stress of caring for a sick child in such dire circumstances was overwhelming, yet Antonina remained determined to protect her family.
The journey to safety
By mid-March, the situation had become untenable, and Antonina made the difficult decision to leave Mariupol. The journey was fraught with danger, as roads were congested with fleeing families. After a grueling 11-hour drive, they finally reached Ukrainian-controlled territory, where Antonina was able to secure medical care for Varvara. The relief of escaping the violence was bittersweet, as they had to leave behind their home and everything they knew.
Once in Kyiv, Antonina’s family began to rebuild their lives. Varvara underwent heart surgery and was registered as a child with a disability. Despite the challenges, Antonina found purpose in her new role as an inclusion technical officer with Humanity & Inclusion, a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations in Ukraine. Her experience has fueled her passion for advocating for those with disabilities, ensuring they receive the humanitarian aid they desperately need.
