Iain Bright shares his terrifying experience of a near-fatal crash after take-off.

In a gripping account of survival, RAF Flight Lieutenant Iain Bright has shared the terrifying moments following an engine failure that led to a dramatic crash at an airfield in Elgin. The incident, which occurred shortly after take-off, left Bright with just five seconds to react as his aircraft plummeted from a height of 100 feet.

Engine failure leads to a life-threatening situation

Bright, a seasoned pilot with the RAF Lossiemouth, was flying a small aircraft when he experienced a sudden and catastrophic engine failure.

“I went from max power to nothing with no warning,” he recounted, emphasizing the shock of the situation. As he faced the ground, a grassy mound loomed ahead, a potential obstacle that could have resulted in fatal consequences. “I knew if I hit it, the impact would kill me,” he said, highlighting the gravity of his predicament.

Emergency response and injuries sustained

The impact of the crash was severe, leaving Bright unconscious for six minutes.

When he regained consciousness, he found himself amidst the wreckage, with significant injuries that would later be revealed as two broken ankles, a broken back in two places, four broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and internal bleeding. “When I came to, my legs were in the grass,” he described, noting the extent of his injuries as he struggled to free himself from the wreckage.

Recovery and gratitude towards emergency services

Bright’s recovery journey has been long and arduous, involving extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. He spent a week in high dependency and a total of three weeks in the hospital, where he underwent surgeries to rebuild his ankles. “I couldn’t put any weight on my feet for four months,” he recalled, reflecting on the drastic change in his lifestyle from being an active individual to relying on a wheelchair.

In a testament to his resilience, Bright has since become an advocate for the Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA), which played a crucial role in his rescue. After raising over £650 for the charity, he expressed his gratitude, stating, “If SCAA had not rescued me, it would have been a horrible journey to the hospital.” His daughter also contributed by raising funds in honor of her father, showcasing the family’s commitment to supporting the lifesaving services that aided in his recovery.

The importance of rapid medical response

Bright’s experience underscores the critical role of emergency medical services, particularly in remote areas. He emphasized the reassurance that comes with knowing that a rapid response team is available when disaster strikes. “It’s reassuring, particularly in remote areas, knowing that there is a service that can whisk you away quickly and get you the right treatment – which is often life-saving,” he stated, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of preparedness.
