Fiona Wares: A beacon of hope and community support
In a world where bullying can often lead to isolation, Fiona Wares has chosen a different path. Instead of retreating into herself after facing childhood bullying due to a speech impediment and alopecia, she has emerged as a passionate advocate for those in need.

Balancing her role as a mother to her profoundly disabled son, Daniel, with her commitment to community service, Fiona exemplifies resilience and compassion.

Overcoming personal challenges

Fiona’s journey began when she and her husband, Martin, welcomed their son Daniel into the world.

Born prematurely and weighing just over three pounds, Daniel’s early life was fraught with medical challenges. At six months old, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition that would lead to multiple health issues, including blindness and cerebral palsy. Despite these hurdles, Fiona and Martin were determined to provide Daniel with the best possible life and education.

“We fought to get him a place at Drummond School in Inverness,” Fiona recalls. “He’s got nine different diagnoses now, but he deserves the best.” This unwavering commitment to Daniel’s well-being has been a driving force in Fiona’s life, shaping her into a fierce advocate for others facing similar struggles.

A relentless advocate for change

Fiona’s activism began at a young age, starting with fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Over the years, she has expanded her efforts to support various causes, including raising funds for a sensory room at Daniel’s school and providing cuddle cots for families experiencing baby loss. Her dedication to community service has not only benefited others but has also provided Fiona with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

“It keeps me happy,” she says, referring to her fundraising efforts. “And I survive on very little sleep!” Fiona’s creativity shines through in her fundraising initiatives, which have included dyeing her hair in vibrant colors and even cutting it off for charity. Her commitment to making a difference is evident in every endeavor she undertakes.

Finding gratitude in adversity

Despite the challenges that come with raising a child with complex needs, Fiona maintains a positive outlook on life. “I feel that we’re very lucky,” she states. “We have challenges, sure, but who doesn’t? I enjoy making a difference.” This perspective is rooted in her understanding that everyone faces their own struggles, and she believes in the importance of gratitude and support.

Fiona’s story is a testament to the power of community and the impact one individual can have. By channeling her experiences into activism, she not only uplifts herself but also inspires those around her. “There’s always someone having a worse day than myself, so it’s best to be grateful with what you have,” she reflects. Through her actions, Fiona Wares continues to be a beacon of hope for many, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can make a significant difference.
