NHS Grampian faces a critical incident due to increased service demand.

NHS Grampian has officially declared a critical incident, citing an unprecedented surge in demand for its healthcare services. This declaration comes as the health board grapples with the challenges of providing adequate care amidst overwhelming pressure on its facilities and partner agencies.

The situation has prompted significant changes in how patients are treated, particularly at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI), the region’s primary hospital.

Patient redirection to alternative hospitals

While the ARI remains committed to treating patients requiring life-saving care, other patients are being redirected to alternative hospitals deemed clinically appropriate.

Reports indicate that patients are being sent to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, which is over 100 miles away, and Ninewells in Dundee, approximately 70 miles from ARI. This redirection aims to alleviate the pressure on ARI while ensuring that those in critical need receive timely care.

Postponement of elective procedures

In light of the current situation, NHS Grampian has announced the postponement of certain elective procedures and appointments, with the exception of cancer treatment and diagnostic tests. Chief Executive Adam Coldwells emphasized the importance of prioritizing patients with the greatest clinical need. He expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to patients awaiting treatment, assuring them that rescheduling would occur as soon as possible.

Public cooperation and ongoing challenges

To further assist in managing the crisis, NHS Grampian is urging the public to help by promptly meeting friends or relatives due for discharge, ideally before midday. This cooperation is crucial for preparing beds for incoming patients. Additionally, the health board encourages individuals to utilize NHS Inform for self-care guidance or to consult their GP or community pharmacy for further advice.

The challenges faced by NHS Grampian are not new. In recent months, health leaders have highlighted ongoing issues, including a significant predicted overspend of £82.5 million. The board has been compelled to implement cost-saving measures, such as reducing bank nursing and overtime, to navigate these financial difficulties. The situation has led to numerous reports of ambulances waiting outside ARI due to high demand, raising concerns about the efficiency of the healthcare system.

Scottish Conservative MSP Liam Kerr has voiced his concerns regarding the persistent issues at ARI, noting that emergency admissions have long been a challenge. He criticized the lack of substantial support from the Scottish government, despite assurances from health secretaries. The situation remains dire, and the community continues to seek solutions to improve the healthcare landscape in the region.
