Jacob Shaw: A Christmas miracle of resilience and hope
In the heart of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, a remarkable story of courage and determination unfolds. Jacob Shaw, a 13-year-old boy, embodies the spirit of resilience as he faces life-threatening health challenges with a smile that lights up the room.

This Christmas, Jacob’s journey takes a hopeful turn as he prepares to celebrate the holiday at home with his devoted mother, Kirsty Mair.

The early battles

Jacob’s life began with a fight. Born with spina bifida, he underwent his first surgery just hours after birth.

This was only the beginning of a long series of medical interventions. Alongside spina bifida, Jacob battles two severe brain conditions: hydrocephalus, which causes fluid buildup in the brain, and Arnold-Chiari malformation, where part of the brain extends into the spinal canal. His mother, Kirsty, recalls the devastating prognosis she received, stating, “I was told that I would be lucky if my child would survive the first year of his life.” Despite the grim outlook, Jacob’s spirit remained unbroken.

A journey of resilience

Throughout his early years, Jacob spent significant time in hospitals, alternating between the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and the former Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow. Despite the numerous challenges, Jacob’s cheerful demeanor never wavered. “He was still thriving despite everything that was happening in his life,” Kirsty shares. Jacob’s infectious laughter and vibrant personality have made him a beacon of hope for those around him.

Facing the odds

As Jacob grew, so did the complexity of his medical needs. He faced multiple surgeries, including a groundbreaking procedure in 2020 that made him the first patient in Scotland to receive a specific type of shunt placement. Each operation brought its own set of challenges, but Jacob’s resilience shone through. Even during a recent cardiac arrest that led to a lengthy stay in intensive care, Jacob maintained his spirited nature, proving that his strength is as remarkable as his journey.

Creating memories

This Christmas is particularly poignant for Jacob and his family. After enduring months of intensive care, the prospect of celebrating at home fills Kirsty with hope. “As long as Jacob is happy on Christmas Day, that is the main thing,” she emphasizes. The family plans to make the most of their time together, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Kirsty reflects on the support they have received from the Archie Foundation, which has been instrumental in helping them navigate the challenges of hospital life.

Inspiration and hope

Jacob’s journey is not just a story of survival; it is a testament to the power of love and family. His mother describes him as an inspiration, stating, “Once you meet Jacob, you never forget him.” As they prepare for Christmas, the Shaw family embodies the spirit of hope, reminding us all of the miracles that can occur even in the face of adversity. Jacob’s story is a powerful reminder that resilience, love, and support can create extraordinary outcomes, making this holiday season one to remember.
