Due to a viral outbreak, hospitals are limiting visits to protect patients and staff.

In a significant public health measure, Dr Gray’s hospital has announced the suspension of non-essential visits following an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting that has affected both patients and staff. This decision comes after reports indicated that approximately 50 individuals at the Elgin facility have contracted the viral infection, prompting the closure of three wards.

Impact on hospital operations

The hospital management has expressed regret over the disruption caused to visitors but emphasized that the action was necessary to prevent further spread of the infection. Only visits deemed essential will be permitted during this period, including those for end-of-life patients, children, and individuals with dementia.

Louise Pearson, the duty manager at Dr Gray’s, stated, “We have made this decision to protect patients, family members, and staff until the situation is resolved.”

Current status of wards and patient admissions

As a result of the outbreak, wards five, six, and seven are currently closed to new admissions. This closure has also affected the hospital’s emergency department, limiting its capacity to admit new patients. Pearson reassured the public that life-threatening cases continue to receive prompt attention, highlighting the importance of contacting NHS 24 at 111 before visiting the Emergency Department or Minor Injury Unit unless in a critical situation.

Response from NHS Grampian

In light of the outbreak, NHS Grampian had previously declared a board-level critical incident due to the high demand for services. However, they have now confirmed that this order has been lifted, indicating a return to normal operations. Chief Executive Adam Coldwells acknowledged the hard work of health and social care colleagues in managing the situation, stating, “Thanks to the hard work of our colleagues and our partner agencies, we have reached a point where we have been able to stand down the board level critical incident.”

As the hospital transitions into a recovery phase, it will conduct a thorough review of the events leading up to the outbreak and the measures taken in response. The management has committed to providing updates to the NHS Grampian board, ensuring transparency and accountability in their operations.

For families affected by the visiting restrictions, the hospital has made ward iPads available to facilitate virtual communication, allowing patients to stay connected with their loved ones during this challenging time. Hospital staff are available to provide further information and support to patients and their families.
