A Scottish firm, Sarens PSG, has announced a significant investment of £1.6 million to establish a new Centre of Excellence in Aberdeen, aimed at supporting offshore wind farm projects. This initiative is expected to create 25 new jobs initially and contribute to the growth of the UK’s offshore wind sector, which is increasingly vital for the country’s energy transition.

Strategic location choice influenced by energy sector developments

The decision to locate the Centre of Excellence in Aberdeen was influenced by the confirmation that Great British Energy, a state-owned energy firm, will also be based in the city. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized that this strategic move is already yielding positive results for the region.

However, the Labour government faces criticism regarding its windfall tax plans, which experts warn could jeopardize tens of thousands of jobs in the North Sea.

New facility to enhance operational capabilities

The new Centre of Excellence will be situated in Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone, specifically at the Altens Industrial Estate. Set to commence operations next year, the facility will be handed over later this month after Sarens PSG acquired the site from local housebuilder Forbes Homes. Steve Clark, managing director of Sarens PSG, highlighted that the presence of GB Energy’s headquarters in Aberdeen, alongside the £400 million South Harbour development and other major offshore wind initiatives, made the city an ideal location for their new facility.

Job creation and long-term ambitions for the energy sector

Last month, Jurgen Maier, chairman of GB Energy, indicated that the new publicly-owned energy firm is expected to create up to 300 jobs at its Aberdeen headquarters, although initial projections suggested that the number could exceed 1,000. The UK Government clarified that the smaller figure pertains to jobs anticipated over the next five years, while the long-term goal remains to reach 1,000 jobs. GB Energy is set to own, manage, and operate clean power projects across the country, supported by a substantial £8.3 billion investment.

Commitment to clean energy and local economic growth

Ed Miliband reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the UK’s clean energy landscape, stating that GB Energy is already making significant strides in its mission to accelerate the clean energy revolution. The establishment of the Centre of Excellence is expected to further solidify Aberdeen’s position as Scotland’s clean energy capital, fostering fresh investments and job opportunities in the region. The facility will be equipped with advanced capabilities, including inspection pits, brake testing equipment, and a wash bay, ensuring maximum uptime for Sarens PSG’s fleet of cranes and heavy lifting equipment.
