Celebrating a century: Ina Gray’s remarkable journey to 100 years
Ina Gray, a beloved figure in Aberdeen, recently celebrated her 100th birthday, marking a significant milestone in her life. Born in 1924, Ina’s journey has been filled with rich experiences and cherished memories.

The celebration took place at the Ferryhill House Hotel, where she was surrounded by 12 of her closest family members and friends, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere.

A royal acknowledgment

One of the highlights of the day was receiving a telegram from His Majesty The King, which arrived just in time for the festivities.

This royal acknowledgment added a special touch to an already memorable occasion, making Ina feel honored and appreciated. As she opened the telegram, her eyes sparkled with joy, reflecting the love and support she has received throughout her life.

From Aberdeen to Brechin: A life well-lived

Ina’s roots are deeply embedded in Aberdeen, where she spent her childhood at 66 Catherine Street. However, her early years were marked by the disruptions of World War II, which began with bombings in 1939. Despite these challenges, Ina’s spirit remained unbroken. In 1952, she married her late husband at the East Church of St Nicholas, and together they built a life filled with love and laughter.

Professionally, Ina made her mark as the head waitress at the Station Hotel, a bustling establishment in the Granite City. She dedicated herself to her work until the age of 84, a testament to her strong work ethic and commitment to service. Reflecting on her career, Ina fondly remembers the connections she made with customers and the joy of being part of the vibrant community.

Secrets to longevity

During a surprise visit from The Press and Journal, Ina shared her secrets to a long and fulfilling life. Her advice was refreshingly simple: “No drinking, no smoking,” and surprisingly, “no makeup.” She emphasized the importance of staying active, recalling how she enjoyed dancing, which kept her both physically fit and socially engaged. Ina’s perspective on life is a blend of wisdom and practicality, showcasing her ability to embrace the joys of living.

As she reflected on reaching the age of 100, Ina admitted that she hardly felt any different from the day before. “The only thing different from years previous is, these last few months, I have started to slow down a little,” she noted. Her humble attitude and zest for life serve as an inspiration to those around her, proving that age is just a number.

Looking back with no regrets

Ina’s journey through life has been marked by resilience and joy. Even after moving to a bungalow in Brechin in 2008, her connection to Aberdeen remains strong. She expressed no regrets about her life choices, embracing each moment with gratitude. As she celebrated this significant milestone, Ina Gray not only reflected on her past but also looked forward to the future with a heart full of hope and happiness.
