In a heartbreaking development, police have officially called off the physical search for Aleksander Benga, a teenager who has been missing from Stornoway for over two weeks. The 17-year-old was last seen on November 18 near the water wheel at Lews Castle, sparking a massive search operation that involved local authorities and community volunteers.

Community response and search operations

Following Aleksander’s disappearance, more than 50 individuals, including lifeboat crews and mountain rescue volunteers, participated in extensive search efforts across the Western Isles. The police, alongside coastguard teams, launched a thorough investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could assist in locating the missing teen.

Specialist officers and divers from Aberdeen and Inverness were brought in to aid the search, demonstrating the seriousness of the situation. Despite these extensive efforts, Inspector Euan Cowan confirmed that the physical searches have now concluded, stating, “Despite extensive inquiries and rigorous searches involving a number of local and national specialist police resources, Aleksander remains a missing person.”

Family’s plea and warnings against scams

Aleksander’s family, particularly his mother, Viktoria Benga, has been vocal about the emotional toll this situation has taken on them. In a recent social media post, she warned the public about potential scam fundraisers that have emerged in the wake of her son’s disappearance. “Not me or my family haven’t set [up] anything at this present moment. Do not send money to anyone for this matter. Please be cautious,” she urged.

The police have also issued a statement regarding fraudulent fundraising pages circulating online, emphasizing that Aleksander’s family has not initiated any fundraising efforts. They urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the case.

Ongoing investigation and community support

While the physical searches have ended, police have assured the public that they will continue to review all available information regarding Aleksander’s case. They remain in regular contact with the family and are committed to pursuing any new leads that may arise. Inspector Cowan encouraged anyone with information to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting incident 0803 of November 18.

Aleksander is described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall, of slim build, with short brown hair. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a beige jumper and black jeans, and he had a yellow beanie hat with him. The community’s support remains strong as they continue to hope for positive news regarding Aleksander’s whereabouts.
