Diane Mackie's legacy lives on through community support for her children.
Topics covered
The heart-wrenching story of Diane Mackie, a devoted mother from Bucksburn, has captured the attention of her community following her untimely death at the age of 42. Diane’s passing comes just two years after the loss of her husband, Jamie, leaving their two young children, Austin and Bethany, to navigate the holiday season without either parent.
In response to this tragedy, friends and family have come together to establish a fundraising page aimed at providing support for the children during this difficult time.
A life marked by love and resilience
Diane Mackie was born on September 6, 1982, and was raised in Bucksburn as one of two daughters of Robert and Patricia Wyness.
She attended Bankhead Academy and later embarked on a career with Aberdeen City Council, where she found fulfillment in her role as a finance assistant in the Care and Repair department. Diane’s life took a significant turn when she met Jamie Mackie online in 2007. Their connection blossomed into a deep love, leading to their marriage in September 2011. Together, they welcomed two children, Austin in June 2012 and Bethany in September 2014, creating a family filled with joy and laughter.
Facing adversity with courage
In March 2020, Diane’s life was turned upside down when she discovered a lump in her breast. Shortly before the COVID-19 lockdown, she received a cancer diagnosis that would change everything. Despite the challenges of her illness, Diane remained a pillar of strength for her family. She documented her journey through treatment on social media, sharing her experiences and raising awareness about secondary breast cancer. Her unwavering positivity and determination to be a hands-on mother shone through, even as her health began to decline.
A community comes together
Tragedy struck again when Jamie passed away unexpectedly in November 2022, leaving Diane and their children devastated. As Diane’s health continued to deteriorate, her family rallied around her, providing support and love. Unfortunately, Diane’s battle with melanoma further complicated her situation, and she began to prepare for her last Christmas with her children. Her commitment to her kids remained steadfast, as she expressed her love and pride for them in her final days.
After Diane’s passing on November 26, 2023, her sister-in-law Anna-Marie faced the heartbreaking task of informing Austin and Bethany of their mother’s death. The community has responded with an outpouring of support, with a Go Fund Me page initiated by friend Laura Mitchell raising over £1,700 to assist the children. The funds will be used to support the children and contribute to a charity in Diane’s memory.
A celebration of Diane’s life is scheduled for December 10 at Donside Community Church, where friends and family will gather to honor her legacy. As tributes continue to pour in, Anna-Marie reflects on Diane’s selflessness and dedication to her family. “She truly was an amazing daughter, mother, wife, aunt, and sister-in-law,” she said, emphasizing the profound impact Diane had on those around her.
