Introduction to a labor of love

In the picturesque countryside of Portsoy, Scotland, Mike Bremner and his wife Dinara embarked on a remarkable journey to create their dream family home. Set on two acres of land, their contemporary detached house stands as a testament to their dedication and vision.

Mike, an offshore marine engineer, and Dinara, who specializes in offshore project management, transformed a dilapidated cottage into a modern sanctuary for their growing family.

The vision behind the build

Three years ago, the couple purchased a property known as Inverkindling, which originally housed farm workers over 150 years ago.

However, the original structure had deteriorated to the point of being beyond repair. “There was really nothing left to save apart from the outbuildings, so we decided to demolish what was left of the original cottage and build our dream home,” Mike recalls. This decision allowed them to create a space that perfectly suited their needs, especially with a three-year-old daughter, Beth, and another child on the way.

Choosing the perfect location

The couple was drawn to the site not only for its size but also for the breathtaking 360-degree views and its secluded yet accessible location. Dinara, originally from Kazakhstan, expressed a desire to raise their children away from the hustle and bustle of city life. “We basically built our dream home from scratch and repaired the adjacent steading, while also re-landscaping the neglected land,” Mike explains. The result is a stunning home that blends modern design with the natural beauty of the Scottish countryside.

Modern features and energy efficiency

Completed in 2023, the house boasts a sleek, modern design with energy-efficient features. An air source heat pump provides underfloor heating, while thermal solar panels heat the water. The open-plan living room and dining kitchen, featuring high vaulted ceilings and expansive windows, seamlessly integrates the stunning outdoor scenery with the interior. Mike shares, “The vaulted ceiling is 6m in height, which to be honest didn’t look so high in the plans, but once it was finished, we were like ‘wow’.”

Creating cherished family memories

The couple’s home includes three spacious bedrooms, with one offering views of the coastline on clear days. Outside, the expansive garden has become a playground for Beth, allowing her the freedom to explore and play. Mike fondly recalls, “The huge garden has been great for Beth as it’s given her freedom. We’ve enjoyed picnics under the apple trees and barbecues in the summer, as well as fun in the snow.”

Looking to the future

Despite their love for the home they built, Mike and Dinara have decided to put it on the market. They have an opportunity to purchase a similar plot closer to Mike’s parents, which would simplify childcare when Dinara returns to work. “We enjoyed the challenge of building our own bespoke home so much that we’re looking forward to doing it all again,” Mike says. Their energy-efficient property, with its flexible accommodation, is expected to appeal to a wide range of buyers, from families to retirees.

A bittersweet farewell

As they prepare to leave their beloved home, Mike and Dinara reflect on the memories they created there. “We will miss everything about the property, but we know that Beth’s granny is the best childminder she could have. Life’s an adventure, so you may as well enjoy it,” Mike concludes. Inverkindling Cottage, located in Bogmurchals, Banff, is currently on the market for a guide price of £400,000, offering the next owners a chance to create their own cherished memories in this stunning setting.
