This past weekend, the vibrant city of Aberdeen was alive with the sounds of music and laughter as young performers took to the stage for the highly anticipated Press and Journal and Evening Express Christmas Concert 2024. This cherished annual event, which has been a staple in the community for over 50 years, aims to spread festive cheer while raising funds for local schools in the region.
Held at the renowned P&J Live venue, the concert featured an impressive lineup of over 900 talented youngsters from various schools across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Among the performers were students from Portlethen Primary, Dunnottar Primary, Stoneywood Primary, Mackie Academy Choir, St Margaret’s School for Girls, Glashieburn Glee Club, and the Gilcomstoun School Gaelic Choir. Each group brought their unique flair to the stage, captivating the audience with their performances and embodying the spirit of the holiday season.
Ticket sales from this year’s concert, generously sponsored by Spar Scotland, contribute to the Pounds for Primaries initiative, which has proven to be a lifeline for many local schools. Earlier this year, a remarkable total of £21,600 was distributed among 120 schools in the north and north-east, showcasing the concert’s significant impact on the community. Craig Walker, editor of the Press and Journal and Evening Express, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “A big part of the concert is that the money raised from ticket sales and the money kindly put into our collection buckets goes to good causes in the north-east of Scotland.”
As the concert unfolded, the sense of community was palpable. Paula Middleton, head of marketing at Spar Scotland wholesaler CJ Lang and Son Ltd, expressed her pride in sponsoring the event, highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting local communities throughout Scotland. “We believe in giving back to those who support us throughout the year, including events such as these which bring people together,” she remarked. The managing director of P&J Live, Rob Wicks, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Having the local community come together and celebrate this time of year is something very special.”
With the concert’s success, plans are already underway for the next edition in early 2025, ensuring that the tradition of supporting local education through music continues.
