Aberdeen’s festive concert unites young performers for a good cause

Over 900 young performers take the stage to support local schools and spread joy.

This past weekend, the vibrant city of Aberdeen witnessed a heartwarming display of talent and community spirit as youngsters from across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire took to the stage for the Press and Journal and Evening Express Christmas Concert 2024. This cherished event, a staple of the festive calendar for over 50 years, not only entertains but also raises significant funds for local schools, marking the beginning of the holiday season in the north-east of Scotland.

Celebrating local talent

The concert, held at the P&J Live venue, featured an impressive lineup of over 900 young performers from various schools and groups in the region. Among the participants were Portlethen Primary, Dunnottar Primary, Stoneywood Primary, Mackie Academy Choir, St Margaret’s School for Girls, Glashieburn Glee Club, and the Gilcomstoun School Gaelic Choir.

Each group showcased their unique talents, captivating the audience with a mix of festive songs and performances that truly embodied the spirit of the season.

Supporting education through community efforts

Ticket sales from the concert, generously sponsored by Spar Scotland, contribute directly to the Pounds for Primaries initiative, which aims to support local educational institutions. Earlier this year, this initiative successfully donated £21,600 to 120 schools across the north and north-east, demonstrating the concert’s impact on the community. Craig Walker, editor of the Press and Journal and Evening Express, emphasized the importance of the funds raised, stating, “A big part of the concert is that the money raised from ticket sales and the money kindly put into our collection buckets goes to good causes in the north-east of Scotland.”

Community support and festive spirit

As the concert unfolded, the atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement, a sentiment echoed by Paula Middleton, head of marketing at Spar Scotland wholesaler CJ Lang and Son Ltd. She expressed pride in sponsoring the event, highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting local communities. “We believe in giving back to those who support us throughout the year, including events such as these which bring people together,” she remarked. Rob Wicks, managing director of P&J Live, also shared his enthusiasm, stating, “After a busy 12 months, there’s nothing better than to get into the festive spirit with a magical performance by so many talented groups and schools.”
