The Clyne Heritage Trust museum aims to attract visitors with a unique Doctor Who exhibit.
A life-sized replica of a Dalek, affectionately named ‘Doris’, is poised to become the centerpiece of the upcoming Clyne Heritage Trust museum in Brora, Scotland. Scheduled to open in July 2025, the museum aims to attract visitors from the popular North Coast 500 route, leveraging the iconic status of the Doctor Who character to enhance its appeal.
The journey of Doris
Nick Lindsay, chairman of the Clyne Heritage Society, purchased the 1970s Dalek model from devoted Doctor Who fan Davie Kirkwood for £1,250. After 27 years of ownership, Kirkwood decided it was time for someone else to enjoy the beloved piece.
This particular Dalek is one of only three crafted by English model maker Andy Shaw, and it stands at an impressive 5 feet 7 inches tall, constructed from wood, metal, and even parts from a Morris Minor car.
Strategic location for tourism
The Clyne Heritage Trust museum is strategically located just off the A9, the main route connecting Inverness to Thurso, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the scenic North Coast 500. Lindsay expressed optimism about the Dalek’s ability to attract visitors, stating, “Who doesn’t want a selfie with a Dalek?” He believes that despite the Dalek’s lack of direct ties to Brora’s history, it will serve as a significant draw for families and fans alike.
A unique narrative for children
In addition to showcasing the Dalek, the museum plans to create a children’s storybook that weaves a narrative around the Daleks arriving in Brora to exploit a unique mineral found only in the local coal seam. This imaginative tale will feature one Dalek left behind as a sentry, adding a whimsical touch to the museum’s offerings. Lindsay, who grew up during the Patrick Troughton era of Doctor Who, hopes to engage young audiences with this creative storytelling approach.
Currently, Doris resides in Lindsay’s home, amusing his family and pets. He humorously remarked that there is “one guaranteed way” for visitors to ensure their safety from the exhibit: “Only if they don’t donate, we will exterminate.” This playful banter highlights the lighthearted spirit surrounding the Dalek’s introduction to the museum.
As the opening date approaches, the Clyne Heritage Trust museum is set to become a must-visit destination for Doctor Who fans and tourists alike, promising a unique blend of history, culture, and pop culture nostalgia.
