Young artist makes waves at national exhibition

Ruby Mitcham, just 17, showcases her talent at the Society of Scottish Artists exhibition.

In a remarkable achievement, Ruby Mitcham, a 17-year-old student from Gordonstoun School, has become the youngest artist to showcase her work at a prestigious national art exhibition. This year, her portrait of her best friend, Iona Watters, is featured at the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) annual exhibition, held at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA).

Despite only two years of experience in oil painting, Ruby’s talent has quickly garnered attention in the UK art scene.

A budding friendship and artistic inspiration

Ruby and Iona’s friendship began in Year Nine, and their bond has only strengthened over the years.

The two have chosen to be roommates every year since they met, sharing not only their lives but also their passions. Ruby’s artistic journey took off when she realized her potential for painting, and Iona has often been her muse. Ruby explains, “Part of the reason I wanted to paint Iona is because she is so graceful.” This grace, captured in her artwork, reflects their shared experiences, including performances in dance shows together.

Recognition at a prestigious exhibition

Ruby’s painting, titled ‘A Scottish Lass,’ was selected from over 2,000 entries, showcasing her exceptional skill among more than 200 works chosen for the exhibition. The SSA, founded in 1891, has a rich history of exhibiting works from renowned artists such as Picasso and Munch. Ruby expressed her disbelief upon learning her painting was accepted, stating, “When I first found out it was in the exhibition… I don’t think the full gravity of it came across yet.” This moment marked a significant milestone in her artistic journey, as she reflected on her growth from a young girl in Edinburgh to a featured artist.

Support from family and mentors

Ruby’s artistic talent was first recognized when she painted a portrait of her father at just 15 years old. Her mother, Joanna, recalls the surprise and pride they felt upon seeing Ruby’s first oil painting, which vividly captured her father’s personality. Ruby’s art teacher, Wendi Van-Hoof, praised her dedication and growth, stating, “Ruby is a fantastic artist who has truly honed her craft over the past two years at Gordonstoun.” With a music scholarship and a passion for both art and performance, Ruby continues to excel in her studies, recently winning the Fleming-Wyfold Young Person’s Art Competition.
