A significant transformation is on the horizon for the iconic Mitchell’s Hospital in Old Aberdeen, which has suffered from years of neglect. This landmark, located on The Chanonry, has been put on the market for the first time in its 220-year history, with a price tag of £200,000.

However, the anticipated repair costs are expected to far exceed this amount, as the building has fallen into a state of dereliction.

Historical significance and current state

Constructed in 1801, Mitchell’s Hospital was originally established as a refuge for widows and unmarried daughters of local dignitaries.

Despite its name, it functioned as an almshouse, providing accommodation for elderly women. Over the years, the building has undergone various changes, including a conversion into flats in the 1960s. The current owners plan to restore the property into serviced apartments or Airbnb-style short-term rentals, aiming to breathe new life into this historic site.

Proposed renovations and preservation efforts

Architects involved in the project have assured that the renovations will not drastically alter the building’s exterior. The primary focus will be on interior refurbishments, which have not been updated since 1965. The plans include necessary repairs to ensure the property is wind and watertight, while retaining the original nine accommodation units. The new owners are committed to addressing the extensive maintenance issues that have plagued the building due to years of financial neglect.

Restoration plans and community impact

The Mitchell’s Hospital Trust, which previously managed the property, struggled to fund essential upgrades estimated at around £500,000. The new owners are prepared to undertake these repairs, starting with the removal of moss and vegetation from the historic cottage. Additional plans include replacing missing slates and tiles, repointing chimney stacks, and assessing the condition of windows and doors for necessary replacements. These efforts are crucial not only for preserving the building’s historical integrity but also for revitalizing the community around it.

As the plans for Mitchell’s Hospital become available for public viewing on the council’s website, there is a growing sense of anticipation regarding the future of this cherished landmark. The revitalization of Mitchell’s Hospital represents a significant step towards preserving Aberdeen’s rich history while adapting to modern needs.
