In a shocking incident that has left the local community reeling, Greig Street Stores in Inverness was the target of a brazen break-in that occurred early on Saturday, December 14, 2024. The theft, which involved more than £10,000 worth of tobacco and cigarette packets, has raised serious concerns about security in the area.

Details of the break-in

Omar, an employee at the newsagents for over two years, recounted the harrowing experience to The P&J. Arriving at the store around 8 am, he was taken aback to find the door ajar and the glass entrance shattered.

“He must have gone inside through the broken glass,” Omar explained, detailing how the intruder managed to access the shop.

According to CCTV footage, the thief was active between 4 am and 5 am, making two separate entries into the store. During these visits, he stole a substantial amount of tobacco products and cash. “He stole all the cigarettes and tobacco in the shop, between £10,000 and £15,000 worth,” Omar reported, adding that more than £100 in cash was also taken.

Police response and ongoing investigation

Following the incident, a police car and two vans arrived at the scene shortly after 8 am. Officers cordoned off the entrance to the shop, restricting access while they conducted their investigation. A police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and at an early stage, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.

“Around am on Saturday, 14 December, 2024, we received a report of a break-in to and theft from a premises on Greig Street, Inverness,” the spokesperson stated. The police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward to assist in their investigation.
