In a troubling incident that has left a hotel receptionist distraught, police in Inverness are searching for a thief who stole a sentimental bag from the Columba Hotel. Jaymie-Leigh Garside, the receptionist, reported that her Harris Tweed Islander bag was taken while she briefly stepped away to use the restroom on Wednesday, December 11.
The emotional toll of theft
Garside described the theft as a “nightmare,” highlighting the emotional and practical implications of losing her bag. The bag contained not only her purse and credit cards but also car keys, phone chargers, and essential medication.
Most importantly, it held sentimental value as it was a birthday gift from her partner, Alex, just three weeks prior to the incident.
Details of the incident
According to a police spokesperson, the theft was reported around PM on the same day. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them, referencing case number 2904 from December 11, 2024. CCTV footage from the hotel shows a man believed to be involved in the theft, captured at the reception area shortly before the incident.
How the theft unfolded
Garside recounted the moments leading up to the theft, stating, “I had stepped away two minutes before to go to the bathroom.” It appears the thief was waiting for the right moment, as he entered the reception area, spotted her bag, and quickly made his escape without uttering a word. “He was trying to look for an opportunity to steal it; he did not even speak to me,” she noted, expressing her disbelief at how brazen the act was.
Aftermath and ongoing investigation
In a troubling twist, Garside discovered that the thief had used one of her stolen cards to make an online purchase of £15 shortly after the theft. “I froze it straight away, but he kept trying to buy more stuff,” she explained, revealing that the thief even attempted to order food from McDonald’s. This incident has not only caused financial distress but has also left Garside feeling violated and anxious about her safety at work.
The police continue to investigate the incident, and Garside hopes that by sharing her story, others will be more vigilant and aware of their belongings, especially in public spaces. The community is urged to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect and preventing further incidents.
