Loganair’s expansion plans: New routes from Aberdeen Airport
Loganair, often referred to as “Scotland’s Airline,” is making headlines with its ambitious plans to expand flight routes from Aberdeen Airport. Following a remarkable financial year, where the airline reported pre-tax profits of £6.9 million and a turnover of £264 million, the company is poised for growth.

CEO Luke Farajallah emphasized the significance of Aberdeen in the airline’s success, indicating that new commercial routes are likely to be introduced soon.

Current destinations and potential new routes

Currently, Loganair operates flights from Aberdeen to nine destinations, including Belfast City, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Esbjerg, Kirkwall, Manchester, Norwich, and Sumburgh.

However, the airline is exploring additional routes that could enhance connectivity for travelers in the region. The Press and Journal has identified seven potential new destinations that could be added to Loganair’s schedule, based on existing routes from other airports across Scotland and the UK.

Highlighting Derry as a cultural hub

One of the most exciting potential destinations is Derry, known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere. The city, which was the inaugural UK City of Culture, boasts attractions such as the historic Derry city walls, the iconic Free Derry Corner, and the famous Derry Girls mural. A direct flight from Aberdeen would not only facilitate city breaks but also provide easy access to nearby attractions like the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Giant’s Causeway, located just 40 miles away.

The allure of the Isle of Man

Another intriguing option is the Isle of Man, a British crown dependency renowned for its stunning landscapes and unique cultural offerings. With its UNESCO biosphere reserve status, the Isle of Man attracts tourists seeking natural beauty and adventure. Visitors can explore the capital, Douglas, where a statue of the Bee Gees pays homage to the island’s musical heritage. The annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle races also draw thrill-seekers from around the globe. A direct flight from Aberdeen could significantly boost tourism and business travel to this picturesque destination.

Connecting to Liverpool and beyond

Loganair is also considering adding Liverpool to its route network. As the birthplace of The Beatles and a UNESCO City of Music, Liverpool offers a rich cultural experience. The city is home to iconic landmarks such as the Royal Albert Dock and the Royal Liver Building, making it a popular destination for tourists. Additionally, a direct flight to Liverpool would provide seamless connections for travelers heading to other major cities, enhancing the overall travel experience.

Business travel opportunities with London City Airport

Another potential route that could greatly benefit business travelers is a direct flight to London City Airport. Located just seven miles from the heart of London, this airport is ideal for those seeking quick access to the city’s financial district. Currently, travelers from Aberdeen must navigate longer distances to reach other London airports, making a direct connection to London City a highly desirable option.

Newcastle: A vibrant getaway

Lastly, Newcastle presents an exciting opportunity for Loganair. Known for its lively nightlife and rich history, a direct flight from Aberdeen would make this vibrant city an attractive option for weekend getaways. With impressive shopping, diverse dining options, and iconic landmarks like St James’ Park, Newcastle is a destination that offers something for everyone.

As Loganair continues to explore these potential new routes, the airline remains committed to enhancing travel options for its passengers. With a focus on expanding its network, Loganair is set to play a pivotal role in connecting communities and fostering economic growth in the region.
