Aberdeen launches free night buses to celebrate Hogmanay.

In a bid to enhance safety and accessibility during the Hogmanay festivities, Aberdeen City Council has announced the launch of free night bus services across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. This initiative aims to provide a reliable transportation option for revelers celebrating the New Year, ensuring they can enjoy the festivities without the worry of how to get home.

Details of the free night bus service

On New Year’s Eve, First Bus will operate ten routes from midnight until approximately 3 AM on January 1. This service is designed to cater to the high demand for safe travel options during one of the busiest nights of the year.

The free night buses are an extension of the weekend night bus services that have been running since November 16, and they will continue until January 5, providing ongoing support for late-night travelers.

Funding and community support

The Hogmanay night bus services are funded through revenue generated from bus lane enforcement, showcasing a proactive approach by the council to reinvest in community safety and convenience. Councillor Ian Yuill, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, expressed his delight at the initiative, stating, “The existing weekend night bus services have proved popular. I am delighted the Council has now been able to add free night buses on Hogmanay.” This sentiment reflects the council’s commitment to enhancing public transport options during peak times.

Encouraging safe celebrations

With thousands already benefiting from the free weekend night buses, the council hopes to see even more people taking advantage of this service on Hogmanay. Councillor Christian Allard emphasized the importance of providing safe transport options, especially during the festive period when many are out enjoying the vibrant nightlife of Aberdeen. “The Aberdeen City Council funding will help to support businesses by giving people another transport option for getting home safely on Hogmanay,” he noted.

This initiative not only promotes safety but also encourages local economic activity by enabling residents and visitors to enjoy the cafes, restaurants, and pubs in the city center without the concern of transportation. As Hogmanay approaches, the free night bus service stands as a testament to the council’s dedication to community welfare and festive spirit.
