Billy Mckay emphasizes the need for more competition in the attacking lineup.
Topics covered
Inverness Caledonian Thistle, currently facing challenges in League One, is looking to bolster its attacking options as the team grapples with a lack of goals. Billy Mckay, the club’s record scorer and assistant manager, has expressed his hope for the addition of another striker to enhance competition within the squad.
With only 15 goals scored in 16 matches, the Highlanders find themselves among the lowest scorers in the division, alongside Queen of the South.
Current squad dynamics and goal-scoring issues
Mckay, who has netted 113 goals in 316 appearances for ICT, acknowledges the pressing need for improvement in the attacking department.
This season, he has managed just one goal, highlighting the team’s struggle to convert chances into goals. Despite the challenges, Mckay remains optimistic about his ability to regain his scoring form, stating, “I still feel fine and I’m still training. I know I need to be scoring more goals, but it’s not like I’m missing chance after chance.” He emphasizes that the focus should be on winning games rather than individual scoring tallies.
Plans for squad enhancement
As the January transfer window approaches, Mckay has indicated that the club is actively seeking to sign an under-20s player to inject fresh talent into the squad. Club consultant Alan Savage has confirmed that they have identified potential targets, but the final decision hinges on the club’s financial flexibility. Mckay stated, “The attacking position is an area we’re definitely looking at. We have a young bench, and we definitely need help.” The urgency for reinforcements is underscored by the team’s recent performances, which have seen them slide down the league table.
Looking ahead to upcoming matches
As ICT prepares for their next match against Stenhousemuir, Mckay is keen to see his team secure more victories. He believes that scoring the first goal is crucial for the team’s success, stating, “It’s important to get the first goal. It’s something we’ve not done as much as we should have, for the dominance we’ve had.” With the team currently sitting ninth in the table, 11 points adrift of eighth-place Annan Athletic, the pressure is on to turn their fortunes around.
Community support and fan engagement
In a bid to enhance the matchday experience for fans, Caley Thistle Supporters’ Trust has partnered with Stagecoach to provide additional bus services to and from the Caledonian Stadium. This initiative aims to encourage more supporters to enjoy the revamped Bar 94 without the hassle of driving. The new service will operate for the upcoming match against Cove Rangers, reflecting the club’s commitment to fostering community engagement and support.
As Inverness Caledonian Thistle navigates through a challenging season, the focus remains on strengthening the squad and improving performance on the pitch. With Mckay’s leadership and the potential for new signings, the club hopes to turn their season around and secure their place in League One.
