A heartwarming initiative by a local dad brings joy and support to families in need.
In a heartwarming gesture of community spirit, Craig Ledicott, a resident of Lhanbryde in Moray, has transformed his home into a dazzling Christmas lights display, all in the name of charity. This festive initiative, which began three years ago, aims to bring joy to families during a time when many are struggling financially due to the ongoing energy crisis.
A labor of love
Craig, along with his partner Chloe and their seven-year-old son, has dedicated months to preparing the spectacular display at their residence on Woodview Crescent. The display features an impressive 5,000 LED lights, meticulously synchronized to music, creating a magical experience for visitors.
With a unique touch pad located in the front garden, guests can select from a repertoire of 22 songs, including beloved Christmas classics and popular children’s TV theme tunes.
Supporting families in need
Visitors to the display are encouraged to donate, with all proceeds benefiting Cash for Kids, a charity dedicated to supporting underprivileged children. Craig, 34, who has no formal background in lighting design, took up this hobby as a way to spread joy during a challenging time. He recalls the first year of the display coinciding with a significant rise in energy prices, which left many families hesitant to put up their own decorations.
“The logic behind it was that there’ll be many families that would be too scared to put their own lights up that year,” Craig explained. “So I decided if I put on a display where they could see some lights, I could bring some joy.” Over the past three years, this initiative has attracted families from across Moray, with many traveling significant distances to enjoy the festive spectacle.
Behind the scenes of the display
Creating this impressive display is no small feat. Craig notes that while it takes about a week to physically set up the lights, the planning and programming require several months of preparation. “To plan the whole show, including synchronizing the lights with the music and programming it, it takes at least a couple of months,” he shared. “In 2021, when I first started, it took me a whole ten months from start to finish.”
Last year, the display raised £548 for Cash for Kids, and Craig is committed to continuing this fundraising effort. “I picked Cash for Kids because it’s for a good cause,” he said. “I have a child myself. Seeing how other families struggle, I want every child to be able to open something this Christmas.” The lights will be illuminated every evening from 5 PM to 8 PM, with the final display scheduled for December 24.
