Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder Charlie Gilmour is optimistic about the team’s prospects in League One, asserting that they can not only avoid relegation but also mount a serious challenge for promotion. As the Highlanders prepare for a crucial match against second-placed Stenhousemuir, Gilmour’s confidence shines through, despite the club’s current struggles.

Current standings and challenges

Inverness finds itself in ninth place, trailing eighth-placed Annan Athletic by 11 points. The situation has been exacerbated by a 15-point deduction imposed after the club entered administration in October. This penalty mirrors the fate of Dumbarton, who are currently at the bottom of the table, six points behind Inverness.

With 20 fixtures remaining, the Highlanders are 18 points adrift of fourth-placed Alloa Athletic, but Gilmour remains undeterred.

Gilmour’s ambitions for the season

At just 25 years old, Gilmour is setting his sights higher than merely catching up to Annan. He stated, “I have full belief that we can stay up. To be honest, I am not focusing on Annan in eighth position. I am looking at third and fourth spots.” His determination reflects a broader ambition within the team to not only survive but thrive in the league. Gilmour believes that the squad possesses the talent necessary to challenge for higher positions, emphasizing the need to convert chances into goals.

Recent performances and tactical adjustments

Despite a recent setback against league leaders Arbroath, where they lost 2-0, Inverness had previously enjoyed a three-match winning streak. Gilmour acknowledges the importance of maintaining momentum and believes that if the team can replicate their earlier form, they can significantly improve their standing. He noted, “We need to convert our chances when we get them. When we go on another run, it can make a real difference to the league table.”

Preparing for Stenhousemuir

As they gear up to face Stenhousemuir, Gilmour is aware of the challenges posed by their opponents, who are known for their aggressive pressing style. He remarked, “Stenhousemuir are a difficult team to play. They like to press aggressively, but we will be ready for them.” The midfielder believes that if the team plays to their potential, they can secure a vital win. Gilmour also highlighted the manager’s emphasis on increasing offensive pressure, stating, “The manager has urged us in recent weeks to get more bodies in the box.”

Adapting to playing conditions

The debate surrounding the use of plastic pitches in Scottish football is ongoing, but Gilmour, who has experience playing on artificial surfaces, sees the advantages. He commented, “I’m used to it, having played in Holland’s Second Division where every team in the league played on artificial pitches.” He believes that these pitches can enhance the quality of play, especially in wet conditions, allowing for a faster game. Gilmour is hopeful that the weather will cooperate during their upcoming match, allowing the team to showcase their skills.
