As the winter chill envelops Aberdeen, the anticipation for the upcoming Spectra festival of light is heating up. Scheduled to take place from February 6-9, 2025, this renowned event promises to transform the city into a vibrant canvas of light and creativity.

Known as Scotland’s Festival of Light, Spectra will feature major artworks from international designers, illuminating the Granite City and attracting visitors from near and far.

Art installations that inspire and engage

This year’s festival theme, “Journeys,” not only reflects the artistic journey of the installations but also nods to the Tall Ships races set to grace Aberdeen in the summer of 2025.

Among the standout pieces is the Sky Castle, a breathtaking installation that will travel an impressive 9,300 miles from Australia to Aberdeen. Located in Union Terrace Gardens, this 100-foot artwork, created by the Australian artist collective ENESS, offers an interactive sound and light experience through a series of inflatable arches.

Nimrod Weis, the artist and founder of ENESS, expressed the significance of Sky Castle, stating, “It was created as a symbol of hope after Covid, alluding to the appearance of rainbows after a storm.” This installation has already brought joy to public spaces worldwide, captivating audiences with its generative soundscape and dynamic lighting effects. As visitors navigate through the arches, their movements activate melodic xylophone sounds, resulting in a mesmerizing interplay of sound and color.

Innovative designs from local and international artists

Another remarkable piece set to dazzle festival-goers is End Over End, a gigantic illuminated slinky toy designed by Newcastle-based Studio Vertigo. Situated at Marischal College, this installation will create a captivating visual experience as the lights mimic the playful movement of a slinky, inviting viewers to engage with the art in a fun and interactive way.

The festival is not just a feast for the eyes; it also serves as a platform for artists to showcase their creativity and innovation. With the support of Aberdeen City Council and various partners, Spectra 2025 is free for the public, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the magic of light and art.
