The iconic Aberdeen punk band reunites after 40 years with a new album, celebrating their legacy.

After four decades apart, the iconic Aberdeen punk band He’s Dead Jim is making a triumphant return to the music scene. Originally popular in the early 1980s, the band is set to release their new album, Head Like A Toyshop, on January 25 through the United States-based label Kool Kat Musik.

This exciting comeback is marked by the release of their Christmas single, Angel Face, a vibrant cover of a glam rock classic.

From local gigs to international recognition

He’s Dead Jim gained a loyal following in Aberdeen, performing at renowned venues like The Venue.

However, as life took its course, band members moved away for education and work, leading to a hiatus that lasted 40 years. Vocalist and bassist Alan Bell remains in Aberdeen, while guitarist Neil Christie has settled in London, and drummer Andy Milne resides in Edinburgh. Despite the distance, the band members maintained their friendship, which ultimately paved the way for their reunion.

A nostalgic journey leads to new music

The idea to reform began as a lighthearted conversation among friends. Alan recalls, “While reminiscing, I jokingly suggested we get back together to re-record some of our old songs. To my surprise, everyone thought it was a great idea.” What started as a plan to revisit a few tracks quickly evolved into the creation of new material, culminating in a full album. Their first single in four decades, Ticket To Explode, was released in September, followed by Paradise Fayre and the festive Angel Face.

Musical influences and creative collaboration

He’s Dead Jim’s sound is a unique blend of post-punk and psychedelia, heavily influenced by glam rock. Alan notes that their original inspirations included bands like The Buzzcocks and The Clash, as well as Gang of Four and The Fall. The decision to cover The Glitter Band’s 1974 classic Angel Face reflects their roots in glam rock. “It’s a stomper and perfect for a Christmas single,” Alan adds enthusiastically.

Despite living in different cities, the band has embraced modern technology to collaborate on their music. They utilize a studio app to record their parts individually and share files, allowing them to create new songs remotely. Alan expresses their excitement about the future, stating, “We hope to release more music after this album. It’s great fun, and we’re primarily doing it for our own enjoyment.”

As He’s Dead Jim prepares to re-enter the music scene, fans old and new can look forward to their fresh sound and nostalgic charm. With their upcoming album and festive single, the band is ready to make their mark once again.
