A Highland mother, Ashlyne Mackay, is bravely fighting for compensation three years after the heartbreaking loss of her two-year-old son, Iain, in a tragic car accident. The incident, which occurred on August 22, 2021, has left an indelible mark on her life, prompting her to take legal action against the driver responsible for the crash.

The tragic accident

The accident took place on the A99 Wick to Latheron road in Caithness when Sonya Henderson, the 47-year-old driver of a Nissan Qashquai, veered onto the wrong side of the road. This reckless maneuver resulted in a devastating collision with Ashlyne’s family car, a Peugeot, while Iain was peacefully asleep in his booster seat in the back.

Following the crash, Iain was airlifted to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where he succumbed to critical injuries just 48 hours later.

A mother’s anguish

In an emotional interview with The Scottish Sun, Ashlyne described the past three years as a period of “torture.” She expressed her frustration over the lengthy process, stating, “It has only worsened our pain and trauma that it has taken Sonya Henderson over three years to admit to causing Iain’s death.” The prolonged wait for acknowledgment of guilt has compounded the family’s grief, leaving them to grapple with their loss without closure.

Legal action and the road to justice

Despite the immense emotional toll, Ashlyne has taken the courageous step of launching a civil action against Henderson. This legal battle is not just about seeking compensation; it is also about holding the responsible party accountable for their actions. A spokesperson from Digby Brown confirmed that a civil action is underway, emphasizing the sensitivity of the ongoing case. Henderson is scheduled to be sentenced next month, and the outcome of this case will be closely watched by many.

Ashlyne’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of road accidents on families. Her fight for justice is not only a personal battle but also a call for greater accountability on the roads. As she navigates this difficult journey, her resilience shines through, inspiring others who may be facing similar struggles.
