Lidl appeals to locals as negotiations with Aberdeen City Council continue.

Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, has revealed the challenges it has faced in securing land for a new store in Lang Stracht, Aberdeen. Following the announcement of the closure of its Mastrick location after nearly 25 years, Lidl is now actively seeking support from the local community to bolster its negotiations with Aberdeen City Council.
Community involvement in Lidl’s plans
In a recent letter addressed to residents, Lidl outlined its efforts to acquire the site adjacent to its former store. The company emphasized the importance of community backing, urging locals to “make their voices heard” as discussions with the council progress.
This call to action comes at a pivotal moment, as the site of the demolished Aberdeen Journals building has finally been listed for sale, presenting a potential opportunity for Lidl.
Challenges faced during negotiations
Lidl’s journey to establish a new supermarket has been fraught with complications. The company disclosed that it has been unable to renew the lease on its oldest branch, leaving them in a state of uncertainty. The negotiations with the council have been ongoing since 2019, when an initial agreement was reached for Lidl to relocate next door. However, significant risks associated with a nearby sensitive data center delayed progress.
In 2020, the council agreed to demolish the existing structure, a necessary step for Lidl’s relocation. Despite submitting a revised offer for the site, Lidl faced rejection from the local authority. Earlier this year, the supermarket chain returned to the negotiating table, only to encounter further setbacks as the council insisted on marketing the site on an open market basis.
Lidl’s commitment to the local area
Despite the obstacles, Lidl remains steadfast in its commitment to the Mastrick community. The company has reiterated its desire to maintain a presence in the area, identifying the former Aberdeen Journals site as an ideal location for its new store. In their letter, Lidl encouraged residents to reach out to their local councillors, emphasizing the significance of having a Lidl store in the Lang Stracht area.
Aberdeen City Council has not disputed Lidl’s account of the negotiations but stated that any proposals will be reviewed by the finance committee. As the situation unfolds, the community’s support may prove crucial in determining the future of Lidl in Lang Stracht.
