Aberdeen FC supporters celebrate the holiday season in sunny Tenerife.

As the holiday season approaches, many Aberdeen FC supporters are trading the chilly weather of Scotland for the sunny shores of Tenerife. The island, known for its warm climate, has become a popular destination for Dons fans looking to escape the winter blues and enjoy festive traditions in a vibrant community atmosphere.

The Tenerife Dons: A community of supporters

At the heart of this festive gathering is Zizzi’s Bar, a beloved spot for the Tenerife Dons, one of the most recognized supporters clubs of Aberdeen FC. Located in Los Cristianos, the bar serves as a hub for fans who come together on matchdays to share their passion for the team.

Founding member Martyn Mackie and bar owner Willie Bruce are often found welcoming fans, ensuring that the spirit of the Dons is alive and well, even thousands of miles away from Pittodrie.

Festive fixtures and community spirit

The festive fixtures, particularly those on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, are among the most anticipated events for the Tenerife Dons. Many Aberdonians make the journey to the Canary Islands during this time, seeking both sun and camaraderie. Martyn Mackie notes, “The festive period is one of our busiest times of the year, with plenty of Dons fans looking to escape the cold.” This sense of community is palpable, as fans gather not just to watch the games but to forge lasting friendships.

A home away from home

For some, like Neil McCracken, a retired offshore worker and dedicated Dons fan, Tenerife has become a second home. Originally from Lossiemouth, Neil has been visiting the island for nearly 40 years and now spends three months each winter soaking up the sun. “Zizzi’s is top quality, and the owner Willie is as mad as a box of frogs! The atmosphere is great, and there’s plenty of people to have a good laugh with,” he shares. This sense of belonging is what keeps fans returning year after year, regardless of the team’s performance.

Despite a recent dip in form for Aberdeen FC, the positive energy among supporters in Tenerife remains strong. Neil adds, “Even when we weren’t doing so well, we at least had the sun to cheer us up. The results have made it just that sweeter.” The combination of good weather, affordable drinks, and a lively atmosphere makes matchdays in Tenerife a unique experience for Dons fans.

As Aberdeen prepares to face Kilmarnock on Boxing Day, the Tenerife Dons will undoubtedly gather at Zizzi’s Bar, united by their love for the team and the festive spirit that brings them together. Whether it’s the warmth of the sun or the camaraderie of fellow supporters, the holidays in Tenerife offer a special kind of magic for those who bleed red and white.
