In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, Adam Golebiewski, an 18-year-old from Banff, has made a triumphant return home after losing his lower legs in a tragic car accident. The incident occurred on September 8, when Adam was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed on Union Road in Macduff.
Following the accident, he underwent a double amputation and spent his 18th birthday in the hospital, focusing on rehabilitation.
Setting goals and achieving milestones
Adam’s journey to recovery was not easy, but he set a clear goal: to walk again by Christmas.
After being fitted with prosthetics, he dedicated himself to intensive rehabilitation at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen. His determination paid off, and he expressed his excitement at being able to stand again. “It’s been three months of pain, being trapped in hospital, but I am home now, so that’s the most important thing,” Adam shared with BBC Scotland.
Support from the community
Throughout his recovery, Adam received immense support from his friends, family, and local sports community. As a former goalkeeper for Deveronside JFC, he continued to attend games to cheer on his teammates. The club even presented him with a signed strip, a gesture that highlighted the strong bond within the community. Additionally, he was visited by goalkeepers from Cove Rangers during his hospital stay, further uplifting his spirits.
Adapting to a new normal
Returning home for Christmas was a significant milestone for Adam, who expressed his joy at being able to spend time with his family. His home is currently undergoing renovations to accommodate his new lifestyle, making it easier for him to navigate using a wheelchair. Adam reflected on the emotional challenges he faced, stating, “I just thought in my head: ‘Why was it me? Why did it happen to a guy that was just trying to do well in life?’” Despite these thoughts, he remains optimistic and grateful for the support he has received.
Looking forward
As Adam continues to adapt to life with prosthetics, he emphasizes the importance of staying positive. “If I am with people I am the happiest person alive. Even when I cry I will smile,” he said, showcasing his resilient spirit. His story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and support, it is possible to overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
