A new documentary titled “Fergie MacDonald: The Ceilidh King” is set to premiere on Hogmanay, offering a heartfelt tribute to the late Duncan Ferguson MacDonald, who passed away just before his 87th birthday in April.
This hour-long program will delve into the life and career of a man who became a cornerstone of Scottish traditional music.
The life of a music legend
Born in Glasgow, Fergie MacDonald spent most of his life in the picturesque west Highlands of Scotland.
He began his musical journey at the tender age of 14 and went on to entertain audiences for over 70 years. The documentary will chronicle his evolution from a young boy in Moidart to a celebrated musician whose impact on the ceilidh scene is immeasurable.
A prolific career
Throughout his illustrious career, Fergie released approximately 50 albums, captivating audiences with his unique style of West Coast ceilidh music. His performances filled dance halls across Scotland, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration. The documentary will showcase not only his musical achievements but also his life as a sportsman, highlighting his success as a clay shooter and his involvement with the Fort William Shinty Club.
Unseen footage and heartfelt tributes

Innes remarked, “Fergie is an integral part of the tapestry that is the Scottish traditional music scene. The documentary will air in Gaelic with English subtitles on BBC Alba at PM on December 31, making it accessible to a wide audience. Following this, BBC Alba will also feature a documentary on New Year’s Day about Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes, further celebrating the rich tapestry of Scottish music.
