Moray is witnessing a dynamic shift in its business landscape, particularly in the hospitality and retail sectors. With several new proposals and transformations underway, the region is set to enhance its offerings for both locals and visitors alike. This article delves into the most talked-about plans that have captured the attention of the community this year.

Seafield Arms Hotel expansion plans

The Seafield Arms Hotel, a historic establishment built in 1822, is making headlines with its ambitious plans to expand its lounge bar. Owner Charles Milne has recognized the growing demand for more seating, as the hotel’s Bar 19 has become a popular bistro among patrons.

The proposed expansion aims to increase bar seating capacity to 52, a move that reflects the hotel’s continued success and investment in the local economy. Planning officials approved these proposals in March, marking a significant step forward for the hotel, which has undergone a remarkable transformation since Milne purchased it in 2014.

New dining options on Elgin High Street

In a bid to diversify dining options in Elgin, the Kirkcaldy-based Glenshire Group has proposed to convert an empty unit at 228 Elgin High Street into a Pizza Hut primarily focused on delivery services. This plan, which includes proposed opening hours on weekends from 11 am to 11 pm, has generated considerable interest among locals. The unit, previously occupied by Ultimate Hair and Beauty, has been vacant since 2022, and the community is eager to see new life breathed into the space.

Poundstretcher’s anticipated return

The return of Poundstretcher to Elgin has also sparked excitement. After closing its previous location during the pandemic, the discount retailer is set to open a new store at Elgin Retail Park. Building standards officials have approved the necessary renovations, which are estimated to cost around £100,000. The new store aims to provide affordable shopping options while creating jobs for local residents, a welcome development for the community.

New culinary ventures in Elgin

Florian and Vanessa Koci are making waves with their plans to transform a former candy shop into a Greek restaurant and takeaway at 71 South Street. With planning approval granted in August, the couple, who relocated from Greece to Moray in 2018, are excited to introduce their culinary vision to the area. The new establishment will feature seating for six and is expected to open next year, adding to the diverse dining scene in Elgin.

Controversial plans for a new takeaway

Another notable proposal involves the conversion of a former antiques shop on Elgin High Street into a takeaway, featuring a doner kebab machine and pizza oven. However, this plan has faced opposition, with 21 objections citing concerns about potential odors, litter, and existing parking issues. The building, which has been dormant for an extended period, is now at the center of a heated debate as it awaits planning permission.

As Moray continues to evolve, these developments reflect the community’s resilience and adaptability in the face of changing economic landscapes. With new dining options and retail experiences on the horizon, residents can look forward to a vibrant future filled with exciting choices.
