Celebrating a Lifesaving Legacy
Kenneth Gee, a lifeboatman from Kirkwall, has been recognized in the 2025 New Year’s Honours List for his unwavering commitment to maritime safety and community service in Orkney. As a volunteer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) for 24 years, Kenneth’s dedication has not only saved lives but has also inspired many in his community.
A Surprising Honor
At 47 years old, Kenneth, who works as a production operator at Repsol’s Flotta oil terminal, received the news of his MBE nomination while on a night shift. “I had woken up and come downstairs to find a letter with a fancy cover,” he recalled.
The moment he realized he had been nominated was surreal, filled with joy and disbelief. “It doesn’t seem real yet,” he admitted, reflecting on the emotional impact of the honor.
A Lifelong Connection to the Sea
Kenneth’s passion for the RNLI began in childhood, sparked by stories of heroism from his grandfather about the Longhope Lifeboat disaster. This early fascination led him to pursue a life dedicated to maritime safety. “When I moved to Kirkwall, one of the crew members invited me to join the lifeboat, and I jumped at the chance,” he shared. His experiences with the RNLI have fostered a sense of family among the crew, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their life-saving missions.
Memorable Rescues and Challenges
Among Kenneth’s most memorable experiences was a harrowing rescue operation involving a yacht named the Black Sheep. During a fierce storm, the crew faced treacherous conditions while responding to an emergency beacon. “I remember looking out of the wheelhouse window and not being able to see the top of the waves,” he recounted. The rescue was complicated by volcanic ash in the atmosphere, creating an eerie glow in the sky. Despite the challenges, the team successfully towed the distressed vessel to safety, showcasing their resilience and commitment to saving lives.
The Spirit of Teamwork
Kenneth emphasizes that every rescue operation is a collective effort. “We are all there for each other,” he stated, highlighting the importance of teamwork in high-pressure situations. Each crew member plays a vital role, and the success of their missions relies on their ability to work together seamlessly. Kenneth’s story serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of lifeboat volunteers who risk their lives to protect others at sea.
