In the heart of the Breedon Highland League, Rothes FC finds itself grappling with a challenging season, currently sitting 17th in the standings. Goalkeeper Sean McCarthy, who has recently returned to the pitch after personal challenges, is determined to help the team rise from the bottom of the table.

With only a point separating them from Strathspey Thistle, who have a game in hand, the pressure is mounting for McCarthy and his teammates.

Personal challenges and a return to football

McCarthy’s absence from the squad earlier this season was due to significant personal circumstances.

His wife underwent surgery in October, which led to unforeseen complications, requiring McCarthy to take time off to care for his family. He explained, “Going on the transfer list was a purely circumstantial thing. I had to miss football for two-and-a-half months looking after my wife and son.” Despite being placed on the transfer list, McCarthy remained committed to Rothes, stating, “I’m still a Rothes player and I want to do well for Rothes.” His return to the team coincided with injuries to key players, allowing him to step back into the role he cherishes.

Strategies for improvement

Reflecting on the team’s performance, McCarthy emphasized the need for a solid defensive strategy. He pointed to a recent match against Formartine United as a benchmark for what the team needs to replicate. “We gave them a tough test, they only won 1-0, and it was a good, solid defensive performance from ourselves,” he noted. McCarthy believes that tightening their defensive shape is crucial for the team to start accumulating points. “First and foremost we need to shore it up and be hard to beat; that then gives you the platform to create chances and score goals,” he added.

Looking ahead with determination

As the season progresses, McCarthy remains focused on the immediate goal of helping Rothes escape the relegation zone. He acknowledges the weight of being near the bottom of the table but insists that the team must earn their place through hard work. “It’s always a worry when you’re down near the bottom, you feel you shouldn’t be there, but we’re there on merit,” he said. With a commitment to improving their performance, McCarthy and his teammates are determined to scrape together points, regardless of their opponents.

In a league where every match counts, McCarthy’s resolve and leadership will be vital for Rothes as they strive to turn their season around. With a blend of personal resilience and team spirit, the goalkeeper is ready to face the challenges ahead, aiming to secure a brighter future for the club.
