Peterhead Port Authority (PPA) has recently taken significant steps to enhance its operational management of two prominent deepwater berthing quays, Smith Quay and Merchants Quay. This strategic move comes as the port prepares for a surge in offshore wind farm construction and aims to transition towards net-zero emissions.

With the growing demand for decommissioning services, PPA is positioning itself as a key player in these emerging markets.

Resumption of management and future plans

After leasing Smith Quay to NorSea UK since 2014 and Merchants Quay since 2018, PPA has reclaimed control of these vital assets as of September this year.

The port’s board has approved ambitious plans to extend Smith Quay from its current length of 120 meters to 200 meters. Additionally, a new mooring dolphin will be constructed, increasing berthing space by another 40 meters. Dredging operations will also take place to deepen the quay to 10 meters, allowing for the accommodation of larger vessels.

Meeting the demands of the offshore industry

As offshore wind vessels continue to grow in size, the extension of Smith Quay is essential for PPA to remain competitive. The port has already seen a 50% increase in vessel usage at Smith and Merchants Quays since the management takeover. Furthermore, PPA has reported a surge in inquiries from various companies looking to operate from these quays, indicating a robust interest in the port’s capabilities.

Environmental considerations and operational improvements

In line with its commitment to sustainability, PPA has partnered with the ASCO Group to operate its bunkering facility, which includes two MGO fuel tanks. ASCO is exploring the provision of MGO/HVO blended fuel, which could help vessel operators reduce their carbon footprints. This initiative reflects PPA’s dedication to supporting environmentally friendly practices within the maritime industry.

Strategic advantages and long-term vision

Graeme Reid, PPA’s chief executive, emphasized the port’s strategic location and its potential to support various offshore wind developments. With a track record of facilitating projects like Equinor’s Hywind Project, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, PPA aims to leverage its extensive deepwater berthing and operational space to attract more business. The port’s focus on continuous improvement and long-term investments ensures that it remains adaptable to the evolving needs of the market.

As Peterhead Port Authority embarks on this exciting new chapter, it is poised to play a pivotal role in the offshore energy sector, providing essential services and infrastructure to support the transition to a sustainable future.
