A search operation is underway for two lynx in the scenic Scottish Highlands.

In a concerning turn of events, authorities have initiated a search operation for two lynx that were reportedly released illegally in the Highlands of Scotland. The wild cats were first spotted in the Drumguish area near Kingussie around PM on Wednesday, prompting immediate action from local police and wildlife officials.

Police and wildlife authorities respond

The Cairngorms National Park confirmed that they had been notified of the suspected illegal release. In a statement shared on social media, the park authority expressed their condemnation of such actions, stating, “We condemn the illegal release of wild animals in the strongest possible terms and we are also concerned for the welfare of the lynx that have been released.” The park has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of both the animals and the public.

Public urged to stay away

Authorities have urged the public not to approach the lynx if spotted. These animals, while generally shy and low-risk to humans, can be unpredictable when in unfamiliar territory. The park authority has advised anyone who sees the lynx to contact the police immediately, quoting incident number 2179 from January 8. This precautionary measure is crucial for both the safety of the animals and the public.

Highland Wildlife Park joins the search

Specially trained staff from the Highland Wildlife Park are assisting in the search efforts. Although the park is home to two Northern lynx, they have confirmed that the missing animals are not theirs. The collaboration between the park and Police Scotland aims to ensure a safe retrieval of the lynx while minimizing risks to the animals and the community.

The illegal release of wildlife poses significant risks not only to the animals themselves but also to the local ecosystem. Wildlife experts stress the importance of responsible wildlife management and the dangers associated with releasing non-native species into the wild. As the search continues, the community is reminded to remain vigilant and report any sightings to the authorities.
