Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) is currently navigating a turbulent financial landscape, grappling with rising operational costs while simultaneously witnessing a resurgence in audience attendance. The charity reported a deficit of £365,000 for the year ending March 31, 2024, a stark contrast to its income of £12.2 million, which has decreased from £13.1 million the previous year.
This financial strain is attributed to various factors, including escalating utility costs, staffing expenses, and the cessation of Covid-related financial support.

Matt Godfrey, the finance and commercial director of APA, highlighted the ongoing impact of inflation and increased National Insurance contributions on their budget. Despite these hurdles, Godfrey remains optimistic about the underlying performance of the organization. “We are seeing growth come back to us, but we are obviously facing the same challenges that every charitable organization is,” he stated.
Audience engagement and cultural programming
In the face of financial adversity, APA has successfully engaged over 356,000 attendees across more than 700 performances at venues such as His Majesty’s Theatre, the Music Hall, and the Lemon Tree during the 2023/24 season. Notable productions, including the acclaimed Come From Away, have garnered enthusiastic responses, with audiences giving standing ovations at every performance. Additionally, the Granite Noir crime fiction festival attracted nearly 20,000 attendees, showcasing the organization’s ability to draw crowds despite financial setbacks.

Looking ahead, APA is focused on maintaining its cultural significance in the northeast while addressing financial sustainability. Godfrey emphasized the importance of reducing consumption and enhancing the organization’s sustainability practices to mitigate the impact of rising costs.
