Jonathan Milton’s journey into the world of dance and musical theatre is a testament to passion and perseverance. Growing up in Aberdeen, Scotland, Jonathan’s love for dance ignited at a young age, inspired by a friend’s performance with the Gray School of Dance.

At just eight years old, he was already taking five different dance classes, showcasing a dedication that would shape his future.

Early beginnings and challenges

In an era when ballet was predominantly seen as a female pursuit, Jonathan faced societal norms that often discouraged boys from participating in dance.

However, his unwavering passion shielded him from negativity. “I think if someone ever did try and make fun of me about it, it didn’t get to me because I didn’t care because I loved it so much,” he recalls. This determination led him to the Dance School of Scotland in Glasgow by the age of 11, where he honed his skills further.

Transitioning to musical theatre

After four years at the English National Ballet School in London, Jonathan’s career took him across Europe, performing with various ballet companies. However, the pandemic brought unexpected changes, prompting him to return to Aberdeen and reassess his career path. Embracing this time, he transformed his parents’ spare room into a studio, diving into singing and acting classes. This decision marked a pivotal shift from ballet to musical theatre.

Success on the West End

Jonathan’s hard work paid off when he auditioned for the West End production of Phantom of the Opera, landing the role of the Slave Master. This was just the beginning; he soon joined the ensemble of Frozen the Musical at Drury Lane Theatre, performing to packed audiences eight times a week. His experiences in musical theatre have been both rewarding and challenging, as he navigates the pressures of constant critique and the desire to excel.

Highlights and homecoming

Among his career highlights, Jonathan cites his time in Chicago the Musical as particularly special. The show, known for its iconic music and choreography, holds a unique place in the hearts of performers. As he prepares to perform at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen, he reflects on the significance of returning home. With over 100 friends and family members attending, Jonathan feels a deep sense of connection to his roots. “It feels incredibly personal because so many of my family and friends who have never seen me perform will be able to come to see the show,” he shares.

A bright future ahead

As Jonathan Milton continues to thrive in the world of musical theatre, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring performers everywhere. His story highlights the importance of following one’s passion, embracing change, and the joy of returning to one’s beginnings.
