Luke Stoltman’s candid discussion on mental health
Luke Stoltman, the renowned Highland Oak and strongman, has recently opened up about his mental health struggles during a panel discussion at the Aberdeen Health & Wellbeing Festival. This event, held at the Beach Ballroom, provided a platform for Stoltman and his brother Tom to share their experiences with an audience of over 100 attendees.
Facing personal challenges
At 40 years old, Luke is navigating a difficult period in his life, including a divorce from his wife Kushi. The strongman has faced public scrutiny following allegations of infidelity, which he addressed on Instagram last November.
During the panel, he expressed his emotional turmoil, admitting he was on the verge of tears while discussing his personal issues. “From a mental side of things, things go up, things go down, then they go back up again,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of self-care in his journey.
The path to recovery
Stoltman highlighted his commitment to improving his mental health, stating that his priorities include being a supportive brother to Tom and a devoted father to his young son. “We all have inner demons. I have inner demons, and the way I battle them is by doing things I love,” he explained. Engaging with family, training, and participating in activities that bring him joy have been crucial in his recovery process.
Seeking help and fostering kindness
In his pursuit of mental well-being, Luke has taken proactive steps, including joining an online support group called The Mens Circle, which meets weekly. He also speaks with a therapist to navigate his struggles. “I think we all need to strive to be a little bit kinder to ourselves,” he remarked, acknowledging the importance of self-compassion in overcoming life’s challenges.
Embracing vulnerability as strength
Stoltman’s journey serves as a reminder that everyone makes mistakes and faces difficulties. “Your mistakes should never define you,” he stated, encouraging others to recognize that there is always room for improvement. He believes that vulnerability is a source of strength, urging individuals to speak openly about their struggles. “No matter who it is, they could be the happiest most excitable person in the world, but you don’t know what’s going on behind that mask,” he concluded, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in our interactions with others.
