Embracing change after a life-altering diagnosis
Laura Torrance, a 61-year-old entrepreneur, has transformed her life and home in the picturesque Scottish countryside. After a successful career in the computer industry, Laura faced a significant life change when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2003.
This diagnosis prompted her to reevaluate her life and career, leading her to return to her homeland of Scotland in 2007 after years of living abroad.
Settling into a small 17th-century castle in Aberdeenshire, Laura enjoyed her time there but soon realized it was not her forever home.
In 2009, she embarked on a quest to find a property that would allow her to create a sanctuary for herself and her beloved cats, Skye and Pixie. After extensive searching, she discovered Mains of Auchindachy, a charming traditional farmhouse that captured her heart.
Restoring a traditional farmhouse with character
Purchased in August 2011, Mains of Auchindachy is a beautiful Victorian farmhouse featuring original elements such as stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and a classic front door pull bell. Laura’s renovation journey involved blending traditional aesthetics with modern comforts, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the home.
Her favorite spaces include the oak room, perfect for summer gatherings, and the cozy lounge with its inviting fireplace, ideal for winter evenings. Laura’s keen eye for design is evident in her choice of decor, primarily using paints from the Dulux heritage range and Laura Ashley, alongside handmade soft furnishings that reflect her personal style.
Creating a welcoming retreat for guests
In July 2016, Laura expanded her vision by converting the annexe of her farmhouse into a self-catering holiday let. This charming one-bedroom cottage, featuring a bespoke four-poster bed and a wood-burning stove, quickly became popular among visitors exploring the local whisky distilleries. The annexe garnered awards from Airbnb and Tripadvisor, showcasing Laura’s talent for hospitality.
However, due to health reasons, Laura made the difficult decision to close the holiday let in March 2023. Despite this, the annexe remains a beloved part of her property, embodying the warmth and charm that Laura has cultivated over the years. Additionally, she built a small house for her widowed mother, further enhancing the family-oriented atmosphere of the property.
A garden sanctuary and a bright future
The expansive garden surrounding Mains of Auchindachy is a testament to Laura’s love for nature. With mature trees and seasonal shrubs flourishing in the fresh countryside air, the garden provides a serene escape. A secluded area features an all-weather cabana and a hot tub, offering therapeutic benefits for Laura and her guests.
As Laura reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the importance of community in her life. Located near Keith, known as ‘the friendly toun,’ Laura has found a supportive network of locals who embody the town’s welcoming spirit. Now, as she prepares to downsize and focus on her embroidery business, Laura hopes to pass on her cherished home to a new family who will appreciate its beauty and history.
