Rapid snowmelt and rising temperatures lead to multiple flood warnings in Scotland.

Flood warnings issued in northern Scotland due to heat rise
Northern Scotland faces flood warnings as temperatures soar, raising concerns for residents.

As the new year unfolds, northern Scotland is grappling with severe weather conditions that have led to multiple flood warnings. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued seven flood warnings specifically for the Highlands and Moray regions, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

In addition to these warnings, eight flood alerts are currently active across various areas, including Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City.

Impact of recent weather on flood risks

The onset of 2025 brought with it a mix of snow and freezing temperatures, creating a precarious situation for residents in the north of Scotland.

However, as temperatures begin to rise, the melting snow poses a significant risk of flooding. The rapid thawing has overwhelmed local drainage systems, particularly in Moray, where residents are already experiencing flooding on major routes such as the A96 near Fochabers.

Understanding flood alerts and warnings

SEPA categorizes flood alerts as early indications of potential flooding from various sources, including rivers, the sea, and surface water. These alerts are typically issued for larger geographical areas, often aligning with local authority boundaries. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding when an alert is issued. In contrast, flood warnings indicate that flooding is imminent, necessitating immediate action to protect both individuals and property.

Areas affected by flood alerts and warnings

Currently, flood alerts are in place for several regions, including Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Argyll and Bute, Caithness and Sutherland, Easter Ross and Great Glen, Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside, Skye and Lochaber, and Wester Ross. Specific flood warnings have been issued for critical areas such as Strath Oykel, Strath Carron, Moy Bridge, Nairn Side (Cawdor), Sluggan to Dulnain Bridge, Boat O’Brig to Spey Viaduct, and Spey Viaduct to Spey Bay. Residents in these areas are urged to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the evolving weather conditions.
